Creating Communitas: African American Doll Bloggers Animate Black Dolls as Sites of Signification

Abstract

Although doll play has traditionally been distinguished from puppetry because it presumably did not occur before an audience, the doll bloggers’ intimate engagement with their audience provides an instructive model of how to create communitas even when the performers and audience cannot share the same moment in time and space.
