Abstract

This paper deals with the analyze the film Fidelio, created by Walter Felsenstein with the collaboration of Hanns Eisler, recently published on DVD in the scope of the monumental edition that marked the thirtieth anniversary of the director's death (1901-1975). The circumstances that gave rise to the project and its final result demand a brief retrospective of Felsenstein's path as an opera director and his theory of the Musiktheater.Access to most of the sources I used in this work was given to me at the Felsenstein-Archiv of the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) in Berlin, to whom I am grateful for the precious support that was provided to me.
