(In)Equality of Gender in Images: Photoethnography of Surfing among Women

Abstract

This visual essay problematizes the issue of gender (in)equality in surfing, having as object the practice of surfing among women. The field research was conducted at Itaguaré Beach, in Bertioga, São Paulo, Brazil, and included the participation of five female surfers. The participants reported being the target of sexist comments and attitudes, such as being interrupted or disqualified by men. They point out that surfing is still a social space marked by a sexist culture. However, the essay also shows that women surfers are increasingly occupying spaces and building new narratives about the sport. The images and reports of the participants of the photoethnographic project “My surfing, my rules” show that surfing can be a space of empowerment and autonomy for women.
