Abstract

This study aimed to analyze how the patriarchal society conditioned the nineteenth century woman to a subordinate position. The object of study was the work O Primo Basílio by Eça de Queirós, published in 1878, with an analysis focused on the characters Luísa, Leopoldina and Juliana. The Feminist Critique was used as an analysis model, and the theoretical contribution was based on texts by Heloisa Buarque de Hollanda (2018) and Raisa Ribeiro (2021). It was intended to analyze nineteenth-century society and how it reverberated a prejudiced and oppressive discourse in relation to the condition of women. In addition, the analyzes of the theorist Carlos Reis (1975; 2009 and 2018), specialist in Queiroz studies, and Francisco Dantas (1999) were used. The perspective of interpretation and analysis was supported by showing how the society in question was conservative and contradictory with regard to the female figure, since the woman suffered from deletion and was silenced by the precepts of patriarchy.
