The purpose of this article is to discuss the concepts of New History, historiographic metafiction and imagined community, relating them to the narrative The Elephant's journey (2008), by the Portuguese writer José Saramago (1922-2010). This one, inspired by the ideas of Annales school, constitutes, by means of his narrative, a critical look at the paradigms of the traditional history, which, according to the author, is piecemeal and partial, ideologically compromised. From the intersections between literature and history, Saramago revisits and interprets the past in his work, through his critical-reflective discourse.
