Fixed Forced Detection approach in the acceleration of tomographic simulations using the GATE code

Our group is conducting several works to develop and optimize a computational simulation methodology that allows studying new configurations of CT scanners and testing new reconstruction codes under development. A limitation found with the traditional Monte Carlo (MC) simulation was the need for long execution times to reduce the noise in the reconstructed tomographic images. In this sense, finding a different simulation method, with variance reduction, was necessary to allow the reconstruction of quality tomographic images in reasonable times. This work explored the Fixed Forced Detection (FFD) mode as an alternative. The results were very satisfactory. Photon counts with FFD were in the same order as with MC, while calculation times were four times shorter. The tomographic images, reconstructed using 360 projections simulated with FFD and MC, were identical and in agreement with the phantom; however, the one constructed with FFD showed better sharpness and lower noise levels.
