The Sustainable Procurement of the Brazilian Government: An Analysis of the Esplanada dos Ministérios

The present work aims to analyze the promotion of sustainable development through public procurements. In this sense, the purchases of sustainable items carried out by the ministries at Esplanada dos Ministérios from 2012 to 2016 was analysed.. Most of the purchases with sus-tainable items refer to office and cleaning material (63% and 14% respectively). There is a lack of knowledge at various levels of the existent sustainable items, from the existence of the product itself to the way of specifying the order in the bid, passing through an archaic view of cost analysis based on the present value. Even considering only the items purchased with sus-tainability criteria, there is no evidence of continuity in the acquisitions. It is recommended investment in education, dissemination of certifications / eco-labels, and good practices be-yond what has been done by government schools.
