Sistema Estadual de Bibliotecas Públicas do Rio Grande do Norte

Abstract

The Public Library System of the State of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil) was organized in 1973 to promote the participation of the community through cultural movimentes, under the sponsorship of the municipal public libraries. The municipal libraries are considered as focus for the irradiation and concentration of cultural activities and those libraries are now beeing adequately equipped to achieve its objetctives and goals. Books are processe at the Biblioteca Pública Câmara Cascudo (State Public Library, at Natal), a union catalogue is in operation and some activities are planned for the libraries (such as exhibitions, conferences, etc.) as well as the technical training of auxiliar-librarians. Data about 150 public libraries in all municipalities of the State are gathered for analysis every month, technical visits are enterpuses every two months to give assistance to these libraries and for evaluation of the results.
