The teaching of management in Library & Information Science Schools In Brazil

Abstract

This study identified business management disciplines offered at Library & Information Science schools in Brazil, with the objective of identifying the existence of a core and common content among the different disciplines as well as management subjects (topics) published by Brazilian Library & Information Science journals. A total of 21 Library Science schools were surveyed and a set of 89 discipline syllabus related to management were obtained. Thirty one different disciplines were identified. . The topics covered by these disciplines were tabulated and compared. Fourteen schools offer a discipline called ‘Librarianship planning' and 13 the discipline 'Library Management I.' Sixty five different topics were identified. The topic "Organizational Structure is taught in 13 schools. A bibliographic search using the main Brazilian journals in the area revealed that Marketing is the subject most published (11 times) and "Evaluation of Library Services' is the second most, with 8.
