Abstract

This article presents the main impacts of scientific, tecnological and information revolution on the service sector. The article's purpose is to stress the importance of a good professional background in today's highly competitive labor market. In order to acquire such a background, self-development is regarded as a basic requirement. The article also approaches the traditional sector of the economy - primary, secondary, and tertiary -, emphasizing the birth of the quaternary sector, which stands for the revolution currently taking place in society. Finally, the article states the fundamental concepts of information (data, information, knowledge, and intelligence), relating them to the elements that should constitute the profile of the modern information professional.
