Este artigo divide-se em duas seções que serão apresentadas sequencialmente aqui e no próximo volume da RBB. Nesta primeira seção analisa- se o pioneirismo de Van Rensselaer Potter, conhecendo a pessoa, seu legado intelectual, sua concepção de ciência e religião juntas com o objetivo de garantir o futuro da vida no planeta terra, o seu credo bioético e uma apreciação crítica de sua obra a partir de dois de seus discípulos, Gerald M. Lower e Peter J. Whitehouse.
