A relação médico-paciente na perspectiva de Pellegrino e Thomasma

O autor analisa a relação assistencial médico-paciente, considerada a pedra angular do exercício da medicina, a partir da perspectiva de Edmund D. Pellegrino e David C. Thomasma. Descrevem-se as principais características dos modelos comercial e contratual na relação clínica, destacando-se a proposta de Pellegrino e Thomasma de um modelo de beneficência fiduciária. Este modelo se baseia na relação de confiança que deve existir entre o médico e o paciente, e tem em consideração quatro componentes do bem do paciente: o bem biomédico, a percepção do próprio paciente acerca do bem, o bem para o paciente como ser humano e o bem supremo ou espiritual. Trata-se de uma abordagem que valoriza a autonomia e dignidade do paciente como pessoa, defende a sua vulnerabilidade face aos avanços científicos e tecnológicos da medicina, mas confere ao médico um papel ativo fundamental na procura do bem do paciente.
