Abstract

Why the world does not exist is one of the most important books in Markus Gabriel’s philosophical career. Its guiding question is simple: given the problem regarding an external reality, would it actually be possible to postulate a realistic ontology in the 21st century? Gabriel not only says that it is, but also states that the idea of an “external world” has absolutely no need to be invoked in the process. The book deals with the problems that the notion of the “world” brings to philosophy and how it is incompatible with the definition of existence presented by Gabriel. From the non-existence of the world, the German philosopher develops his ontology of fields of sense, which would be a hyper-pluralist way of dealing with existence. Finally, the author links his ontological findings with three areas of extreme importance for human beings: science, religion and art.

Author Biography

Gabriel Cruz, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro

Mestrando em Filosofia pelo PPG-FIL da UFRRJ na linha (2) Ontologia, conhecimento e linguagem, tendo como foco de pesquisa as relações entre o "Novo Realismo" e o "Realismo Especulativo". Formado em Letras (português e literaturas) pela Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (2023). Duas vezes consecutivas bolsista de iniciação científica vinculado ao departamento de filosofia da UFRRJ (2021-2023). Principais temas de pesquisa: realismo (especialmente o novo realismo e o realismo especulativo), idealismo (especialmente o alemão), ceticismo (especialmente o neo-pirrônico). Com ênfase em ontologia, epistemologia, lógica e filosofia da linguagem.
