FRANZ BRENTANO, ADOLF EXNER AND THE FUTURE OF PHILOSOPHY

Compared to other scientific disciplines, the situation of philosophy was always quite a difficult one. As a producer of thoughts, it always had to defend itself against the attacks of several other disciplines and significantly always attracted less students. In his inaugural speech as the new rector of the University of Vienna in the year 1891, Adolf Exner, already attacked philosophy in his inaugural speech as a fallen royalty and associated the small number of students with the drop of scientific production, the lack of methodological pluralism and he demanded the permission of free spirit in philosophy. Franz Brentano, an ardent supporter of the method of the natural scientific method, defended philosophy asking the powerful rector about his comprehension of philosophy and its method. In his discourse, he also proved that the policy of the university had a link with the current situation, as the scientific production had not dropped at all. On the contrary, it had increased. Brentano also tried to give a response about the future of philosophy. The above shown discussions between Franz Brentano, Adolf Exner and the future of philosophy, are the reflected goal of this text.
