Abstract

In this article, Skinner’s radical behaviorism and Wittgenstein’s conceptions of meaning are approached in view of two questions related to subjective states and causal determination of behavior. The confrontation of both conceptions expresses agreement in rejecting referentialism and mentalism, as in the human behavior emphasis. However, the superficial agreement hides a tension between the normative and the empirical, in which there is radical disagreement. While Wittgenstein emphasizes the organizative character of the grammar that rules language, Skinner takes it as mere generalization of empirical contingencies, which produces different notions of behavior.

Graduando em Psicologia na Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana.
