Progress as a form of destruction: Milton Hatoum's literary geography
Keywords:
modernization; literary geography; Milton HatoumAbstract
This article aims to analyze the literary geography proposed by Milton Hatoum in four of his novels, Relato de um certo Oriente (1989), Dois Irmãos (2000), Cinzas do Norte (2005) and Órfãos do Eldorado (2008), all of which express a critical view of Brazilian modernization and affirm the gesture of narrating as a way of understanding the world. To do this, we will analyze their contradictory characters and complex narrators, observing how the disappearance of an old Manaus and characters who don't conform to capitalist rationality end up condemned and lost, being thrown into the madhouse, prison or poverty. We also observe how modernization, in the context of the military dictatorship, alters the descriptions of relationships and the geography of the cities described in the novels. We conclude that Hatoum both points to a critique of the violent modernization promoted by the military in his novel and to a narrative power of literature that goes beyond historical conjunctures.
