Between the book and the audiobook: a comparative reading of Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas, by Machado de Assis

Based on the concepts from Intermediality Studies, our study proposes a comparative reading of two different media types, the book and the audiobook, using the novel Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas) by Machado de Assis as an example. For this proposition, we analyze the distinct cognitive and perceptive features and traits of the printed book and the audiobook, as proposed by authors like Lars Elleström (2021) and like Jørgen Bruhn and Beate Schirrmacher (2022). We show how the intermedial similarities between the book and the audiobook allow the mediation of the same cognitive value, while we highlight the implications of their differences for the reception in the learning of literature. By adapting Celso Vasconcellos’ (1992) dialectical methodology, we put into perspective the construction of knowledge by literature and the knowledge of literature, based on Rildo Cosson (2006), where the former deals with the mediation of the media product, analyzing the pre-semiotic modalities of media, and the latter deals with representation, analyzing the semiotic modality. Our goal is to show that the comparative reading of media promotes media literacy, enabling the development of critical reading and production skills, by understanding of how literature constructs meaning in different media types.
