Abstract

The present essay proposes a detailed interpretation of the Theme T, “Cecília among the Lions”, of the novel Avalovara, by Osman Lins. Complex, multilayered and ingeniously contrived, the novel solicits a comprehensive and circumstantial investigation of each one of its twists and turns. The Theme T is endowed with remarkable symbolic and narrative peculiarities, which we seek to elucidate by means of some mythological connections and, above all, with the help of the prefigurative technique devised by Aeschylos for the dra- matic construction of his Agamemnon. The concept of birefringence, on the other hand, derives from the novel itself and is employed in virtue of its richness and adequacy for the hermeneutical clarification of a Theme that has duplicity as its very core.
