Abstract

Neste trabalho, trataremos de alguns aspectos concernentes às representações do espaço urbano tais como aparecem em trechos selecionados do livro XV (De aedificiis et agris) das Etymologiae de Isidoro de Sevilha (560-636 e.c.). É aí que o Hispalense expõe os principais vocábulos empregados para descrever o espaço urbano. Partindo de um escrutínio de base gramatical, no qual se encontram quatro princípios de definição ”“ a etimologia, a analogia, a glosa e a diferença ”“, Isidoro apresenta os matizes próprios às uerba que descrevem e, concomitantemente, (re)significam as res do espaço urbano: ciuitas, urbs etc.
