Abstract

In this article are addressed the representations of the music of the Amazon, in an exhibition promoted by the National Library in 1969, in the context of the Brazilian military dictatorship. Using bibliographic, documentary and hemerographic research, it is sought to understand how such representations articulate or not with the project of occupation, integration and defense of the Amazon that determined disastrous actions in the region, especially for the native populations. The concepts of representation in Chartier are used for memory and identity in Candau and Pollak. The repertoire reveals a folklore and regionalist representation, with traces of the local Belle Epoque, but also the look to the regional from the work of Villa-Lobos. This selection lacks dialogue, however, with the urban music of the period or with the religious music, more integrated to the national scene.
