Abstract

This review of the biography “Juca Paranhos, barão do Rio Branco” by Luís Cláudio Villafañe G. Santos (Villafañe, L.C. Juca Paranhos: o Barão do Rio Branco. São Paulo: Companhia das Letras, 2018, 560p) analyses the trajectory of its main subject in the contexto of his activities as a young journalist in the 1860s and 1870s. This review argues that the period is underestimated in the career of Rio Branco, for it gave to him skills and relationships that were later important to his performance as minister of Foreign Affairs.
