The use of food baits to monitor fruit fly population, in the traps bottle, is a low-cost alternative and effective. The study objective was to evaluate the effect of food baits, in population monitoring of Zaprionus indianus (Diptera: Drosophilidae) in guava (Psidium guajava, Myrtaceae) orchard. Conducted in guava orchard in the orcharding sector of the Colégio Politécnico of Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in Santa Maria county, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, from March 18 to June 17, 2009. Pet bottles of six hundred millimeters were used as hunting fly traps. Guava juice and jelly palm (Butia capitata, Arecaceae) juice were used as attractive food. Data were statistically analyzed. Jelly palm juice and water (20% +80%) showed the highest levels of capture. The use of attractive food coupled with the management of crop residues in guava trees can take to the population suppressing the advancement of Z. indianusin fig orchards.
