In this work, we will present mariculture, seen as a technology for producing food of marine origin and a possible alternative to contribute to feeding and overcoming poverty for a large part of the population, and its environmental implications. We try to present the different technologies currently used, as well as the changes that the activity can cause in the environment. It was observed that the amount of negative environmental impacts outweighs the positive impacts if production is not carried out properly and that the positive environmental impacts are beneficial depending on the point of view. Studies in the area of mariculture are recent, mainly in Brazil. Thus, the identification of its problems focused on the possibilities of correcting or reducing the different types of impacts are part of the construction of a more adequate methodology for achieving the desired sustainability.
