Abstract

The objective of this article is to present some comments about the concept of manière in Montaigne and its relations with the ideas of truth, wisdom, philosophy, and science. At first it will be discussed based on an interpretation handed down by Starobinski who argues that Montaigne makes an aesthetic conversion in his philosophy. One of the argumentative paths will be to understand manière as the opposite of matiere. Montaigne will focus on manner rather than content over objects. The aim of this article will be to understand what this aesthetic conversion of Starobinski means and relate it to the ideal of manière presented in “De l’Art de Conferer” and to the notion of essay that runs through all of Montaigne’s work.
