Abstract

This critical review addresses the 233-page book Towards responsible machine translation: ethical and legal considerations in machine translation, edited by Helena Moniz and Carla Parra Escartín, published by Springer in March 2023, and available as .epub and .pdf. The book is the fourth volume in a series of books that discusses a wide range of topics related to machine translation (MT). The book consists of 11 chapters in total, with the contribution of 23 authors who are experts in their respective fields of research and professional practice. Subdivided into three parts — I. Responsible machine translation: ethical, philosophical and legal aspects; II. Responsible machine translation from the end-user perspective; and III. Responsible machine translation: societal impact — the book deals with ethics in AT from a holistic point of view, considering ethics in general and presenting the many different historical, social, technical, and philosophical foundations that surround it. Therefore, Towards responsible machine translation: ethical and legal considerations in machine translation is a book primarily intended for Translation Studies, Computational Linguistics, and Philosophy scholars, researchers, and enthusiasts.
