Inequivocamente um fenômeno da Antiguidade Tardia, o neoplatonismo representou para o homem antigo o último bastião das suas velhas tradições ancestrais, da religião dos antepassados e da cultura clássica. A filosofia neoplatônica de Plotino, especialmente, engendrou preceitos que, por seu significado, ressoaram através das últimas vozes do paganismo e sobreviveram à Idade Média na filosofia escolástica. Embora as idéias de Plotino tenham alcançado tal importância ulterior, foram o cerne dos conflitos entre Porfírio e Jâmblico durante o séc. III. Eis o ponto de partida para analisarmos as nuances do neoplatonismo à luz deste contexto histórico.
